The new UP Express has been out testing today between Toronto Union Station
& Mimico. Photos of the test trips have been posted on twitter & can be
viewed on twitter @UPExpress

Toronto Airport Express which currently operates between Pearson Airport &
the downtown hotels will end service effective October 31 due to low
ridership. Until the UP Express is operational the other way into downtown
Toronto is by GO Transit with a transfer to a bus to the Union Station Bus
Terminal or riding the TTC to downtown.

If the bus is suffering from low ridership; how is the billion dollar train
going to be worth the cost of construction ?

Something, along with a whole lot of other things is smelling mighty
like a load of dead fish......but what do I know.....I'm only one of the
poorer Ontario tax payers.

Possibly because of the schedule or the travel time to/from downtown &
people are switching to Limo's? I've used the service several times & have
been happy with the service levels & fare. The only downside was leaving the
Intercontinental Hotel pick up point returning back to Pearson was the
traffic stop go, stop go. On my next visit to Toronto next year I will look
forward to the train with direct service right to Union Station.

The bus takes over an hour; the train will be about 20 minutes. The bus gets stuck in rush hour traffic; the train won't. The bus, despite leather seating, is more cramped than the train.

Those three things alone will justify the UP express train, and give it a huge push.

By your argument, Fr. Fred, OC Tranpo in Ottawa should never have tried the O-train! The bus service to Carleton U was slow and not always busy. The O-train, as we know, is a roaring sucess.

People always prefer trains to buses, given a choice; and a fast train over a slow car will also do well.

There's a nice shot of the train in testing service taken by Alex Titu today here:

Railpictures.ca - Alex Titu Photo: Thanks to some excellent information from a few friends, I was able to make it out to Etobicoke to witness the mainline test run of the Union Pearson Express units 1001, and 1002. They were given a permit to occupy tracks 3 and 4 on the Oakville Subdivision between Canpa and Gardiner. During the few hours of testing, they ran the train back and forth between these two points several times. I believe they tested the doors and made a breif stop at Mimico as well. | Railpictures.ca – Canadian Railway Photography – photographie ferroviaire Canadienne. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16362

That's even quicker than the Canada line in Vancouver killed off YVR
Airporter. That service lasted until the end of September 2009, a month and
some after the Canada Line opened.

Union is correct...the P just stands for Pearson.

To be honest I make the same mistake too, and keep thinking the Colour scheme on those cars is all wrong. I mean, where's the Armour Yellow?

Gotta love the scheme. It compliments the bright orange shag carpets installed in the interior.

glad to see Toronto Airport finally catching to such leading
airports as St. Louis
St. Louis airport is served by the same light rail that provides
local transit within the city. There are about 15 stops between
the airport and downtown. The trip takes about 33 minutes, while
according to Google, it can be driven in 18 min.
Post by 'Mark W. Walton' mark.walton-***@public.gmane.org [Canadian-Passenger-Rail]
Or even Vancouver, with the Canada Line.
The Canada Line has about a dozen stops between the airport and
downtown. Google Maps says it takes 26 min, while driving takes
21 (the latter obviously dependent on traffic conditions).

Toronto is going to have only two intermediate stops between
Union Station and the airport. Exact schedules have not been
announced yet, but it should be competitive with driving at
off-peak times, and much faster than driving at rush hours.

St. Louis airport trips cost the regular fare of $2.50, and
Vancouver costs $9 on weekdays and $7.75 on evenings and
weekends, including a $5 airport surcharge. Toronto fares
haven't been announced yet, but they're expected to be
over $20.

They're really quite different types of services: local transit
that has been extended to the airport vs. a dedicated premium-
fare express train.

For the Canada Line the $5 add on fee to/from YVR (Vancouver International
Airport) does not apply if you have a prepaid fare -Faresaver, Daypass,
Monthly Passes, West Coast Express weekly & 28 day passes, University
Passes, Employer Passes, & BC Bus Pass. Anyone paying a cash fare will be
subject to the $5 add on fare. Anyone frequently travelling to/from YVR
using transit I would suggest purchasing Faresaver Tickets which come in
book of 10 adult 1 zone are $21 saves you $0.40 a ride or a 2 zone book is
$31.50 or a 2 zone book is $31.50 versus a single cash fare of $4. A 2 zone
fare is in effect from start of service from start of service to 630pm
Monday-Friday. Also Faresavers have no expiration date.

As for travel times Google maps is a little off. There is no way that you
can drive it from downtown to YVR in 26 mins during the day, unless it's
late in the evening
