VIA celebrated the 110 anniversary of the Ocean with the train that
departed Montreal on 2 July 2014. It included four extra cars behind a
Skyline car (instead of the regular Park car for sleeper plus
passengers). The four cars were two chateaus, lounge car 1750 Glenfraser
and a Park Car. VIA's president entertained MPs. MLAs, Mayors and other
dignitaries in these cars. The train is seen arriving in Halifax and
then the dignitaries are lead down the platform by a bagpiper. VIA's
President then made a short speech to the passengers and assembled guests.

The video can be seen at

They're shown leaving the train from Ren car 38. Is that the one
just ahead of the transition car? Was the tail end of the train
not on the platform?
VIA's President then made a short speech to the passengers and
assembled guests.
Were the media on hand, or had they given up and gone home, or
not bothered showing up in the first place? In a quick search,
I didn't find any news reports about this event, but I could have
overlooked something.

Yes, that's right ahead of the transition. That's the last door that was able to make the platform with that length of train. When they left today, they had the 2 Chateaus, Glenfraser and the Park on a separate track, and combined the train after loading passengers.

I didn't see any sign of media on hand, so I imagine they had left and gone home by that time. Technically, the official cocktails event was "cancelled", so they may have just not bothered.

The turnout for the event was actually quite good, and the reception seemed well put together. The president only gave a brief speech (which I think many of us missed altogether), but he was quite approachable afterwards so many people had a chance to meet him and have a few words. Apparently he made an announcement on board on the trip down that he was available and happy to chat with passengers. People could let crew know that they wanted a chat, and he made the rounds to each of them.

I only spoke with him briefly in the station, but I know some people had good long chats with him on the train, and got the overall impression that he has some interesting ideas for the future of service in Atlantic Canada. How those will pan out remains to be seen, but he is at least paying some more positive attention than his predecessor.

I was on Train 15 on July 2nd with my family. We were served a special menu for the anniversary, and a complimentary glass of bubbly with dinner.

I understand from our crew that the Chateau cars on train 14 may have been on their first official outing in their "Prestige" class incarnation. Can anyone confirm this?

PS: If anyone is still looking for a Chateau model, the onboard souvenir carts on 14 and 15 may still have some. I didn't quite clean them out :)

David, thanks for the Video.

What time did they arrive as it appears they must have been relatively late in the evening well past the  18:38 hrs. arrival?
The arrival certainly  not like it would have been 110 years ago,and let alone 25years ago.
By that I mean the people coming off  the train would not have been struggling, trying to manoeuvre down the steps with their bags, by that I mean the bags would have been taken off  by the on boad staff and station personnel or at  least  helped down.
My how train travel has changed .

David Othen and Tim Hayman say that the Budd cars on that train
were Château Brûlé and Bienville and Strathcona Park. Branchline
magazine says the cars in the Prestige rebuild program are Château
Cadillac, Denonville, Dollard, Joliet, Lauzon, Maisonneuve, Salaberry
and Varennes, and Glacier, Kootenay, Laurentide, and Prince Albert
Park. So it seems that Terry's informant was mistaken.

Just scroll a bit, like watching for the end of the train! Those big windows are really, well, eye-catching, when photographed from the side Manny was on.
