Really useful information contributing to the article:

"Because the steel-wheeled vehicles run on steel tracks, it can sometimes take time for train to stop after a conductor brakes."

It may surprise some of us just how ignorant the non rail fan can be about how trains operate. We've seen our share of news stories about fatal accidents at level crossings where someone is interviewed wondering why the train couldn't steer out of the way.
I spend most weekends at the Toronto Railway Museum interpreting our TH&B caboose and many younger visitors think the hand brake wheels at each end of the car are steering wheels.

I have passengers at least once a week ask me when I'm conducting a brake test when I ratchet on the hand brake .... They would say " Are you winding up the train? " it really is amazing how many people take the Go train and have no idea how or what makes it move safely

I'm a retired loco driver in New South Wales, we used to have Alcos with
the hand brake in the cab. One day at a station I unscrewed the hand brake
wheel and alighted from the loco with the wheel in my hand, announced to
station staff that the steering wheel had come off. There were looks of
amazement from passengers then we got the right away and off we went.

The RhB E-Locos in Switzerland actually have a control that looks very much like a steering wheel:

In that loco it's essentially the throttle and loco brake combined.

why the train could steer out of the way.

yeah, I definitely get the point...

people just GET IT.

i see so many people so damned oblivious to tracks. They walk right
across them without even lifting their head, like they are walking
through a parking lot.

I guess you could say if the train could steer then it's gonna cost
at least $1mill.

Anyone know what happened?...
VIA #33 (Quebec - Ottawa) killed a trespasser in Beaconsfield
(West Island Montreal).
Here's a tweet that says the incident was at the Woodland Ave.
crossing in Beaurepaire (western part of Beaconsfield):

At least one track is open, as #32 (Ottawa - Montreal) and #60
(Toronto - Montreal) have passed through the accident site and
arrived at Central Station with minor delays.

Apart from #33 itself, the only VIA train that had a major delay
because of this incident was Montreal - Toronto #63. It was held
at Central for 56 min and at Dorval for 24 min, but has now left
Dorval, according to the VIA web site.

Many years ago the Union Pacific displayed one of their new locomotives at the East Los Angeles station. The display included a walk through the cab. I asked the UP representative if visitors asked where the steering wheel was. His reply, "More than you would think."
