The last Sunday departure for #2 from Vancouver this year will be on Sunday
October 12 & which in turn will be the last Thursday Departure from Toronto
Union Station on October 16 & arriving back into Vancouver on Monday October
20th. Currently there are 4 trains sets on the circuit & that will be
reduced to 3 once the twice weekly service kicks in.
There were rumors flying around in Vancouver of further cuts to the Canadian
of a once a week service a few weeks ago, but that rumor has since died off.
The way VIA is being funded by the fed's....don't expect to see any
improvements of service to the Canadian anytime soon.
Post by Tom Box tbox-***@public.gmane.org [Canadian-Passenger-Rail]Terry Muirhead reported the last Sunday departure from Vancouver
last year on Oct 6 (message #73962). I suspect that trainset would
have returned west as #1 leaving Toronto on Oct 10, and that would
have been the last Thursday departure of that year.
Post by railbus-6duGhz7i8susTnJN9+***@public.gmane.org [Canadian-Passenger-Rail]To get an idea of what to expect for this year, I just spent some
time on VIA's train schedules web page and it looks like Thursday
departures from Toronto run to at least Oct 16. The following
Thurs, Oct 23 the site says "train not operating on date requested".
So say both Reservia and the PDF timetables on the VIA web site.
They say the last Sunday #2 will be on October 12 (the day before
Thanksgiving) and the last Thursday #1 will be October 16.
Nobody can say for sure that will really happen (maybe a giant
meteorite will strike Earth tomorrow and wipe out civilization),
but I see no reason to doubt that's VIA's current plan.
The off season frequency reduction is now normal, and don't see
why VIA would make a special announcement about it. But you never
know. We could see a press release proclaiming "VIA demonstrates
sound financial management by adjusting frequency of Canadian to
match demand."
