The Gaspésie Railway is revising its investment plan to take
a step-by-step approach to its projects. The total needs have
been estimated to be $107 million, but the railway realizes
that getting that much from governments in one shot is unlikely,
so it's dividing the work into smaller chunks, hoping that will
improve its chances of getting funding.
The railway needs to increase the load-bearing capacity of two
bridges at Cascapedia-St-Jules (between Carleton and New Richmond)
and at Grande-Rivière. It also wants to redo the pillars of the
bridge at Port Daniel to serve a cement plant planned for there,
and it needs to invest in the 708 culverts all along the line.
For the next two years, priority is to be given to improvements
from Matapedia to Port Daniel.
The story doesn't mention VIA service. The Cascapedia bridge
is west of New Carlisle, so if it needs work, that could provide
VIA with an reason/excuse not to resume service between Matapedia
and New Carlisle. And if work is only done from Port Daniel west
in the next two years, then a return to Gaspé will be a long way
off.
