I note that the end door of the rebuilt Château car says

88206
Chateau
Denonville

So apparently the Châteaux will be retaining their names,
even if the name doesn't currently appear on the side of
the car.

Yes, it was on Saturday July 5 when I saw the train and when I sent that
note, I see it didn't get posted until today.

Does anyone know the status of the tracks through Saskatchewan and Manitoba
or are they outside the areas subjected to the flooding.

Train No. 2 arriving Toronto July 8th Ex Vancouver July 4.
Via Travel Advisory latest report
Train is currently 10h00 late . ETA in Toronto: 18h30 -19h.00
Train No. 1 from Toronto July 8 scheduled to leave at 22:00
tonight will now leave at 01:30 which is 3h30 late.
And another very odd travel advisory from the VIA web site:
"Due to operational issues, train 692 that left Vancouver on
July 5, 2014 will encounter an important delay. The train is
currently 12h00 late."

#692 doesn't run anywhere near Vancouver. There was a #692 that
was scheduled to leave The Pas on July 5 at 03:15, and another
#692 that would normally have originated in Churchill on July 5
at 19:30, but because of the problems on that line, should have
originated in Gillam on July 6 at 05:30. It's not clear which
train the VIA notice is referring to.

I knew there were problems north of Gillam, but I had no idea they were detouring via Vancouver. That's one heck of a detour. Good eye noticing that advisory, Tom! Sounds like VIA needs a heads-up to correct that.

In other news, one year ago today was the major flood that hit Toronto, which resulted in the famously flooded GO Train marooned (not CP maroon) up the Don Valley line:
http://tinyurl.com/godonflooded http://tinyurl.com/godonflooded

I was in the Business Class lounge, where I also hope to be on Thursday, when the deluge began. By the time our train crossed the Don River bridge, the flow had started. This year, I'll be happy to be in a refurbished Business Class car with 2+1 seating, if I'm lucky!

Thank you for the consist postings. I find them interesting to see how VIA utilizes their stainless steel Budd cars. This consist has Grant Manor as part of the train, and this marks the first time I have seen this car used since the accident in the Jasper Station a few years back. It must have been serious damage to take so long in getting repaired. Grant (yes that is why I am interested in this car!!) out in Victoria

That was added on after I toured the equipment 1 week ago on the day the
equipment arrived here.

Take note in the introduction of the video, if I heard correctly in the
introduction he quoted as saying...."welcome to pacific western station".

I note that the end door of the rebuilt Château car says

88206

Denonville

So apparently the Châteaux will be retaining their names,
even if the name doesn't currently appear on the side of

One gets the impression that the cars were 'rushed into service' although technically they are not in service, just for inspection at the travel expo. Most travel writers probably didn't notice the missing lettering. And that girl behind the VIA official looks bored. She seems to enjoy looking at the stainless steel cars on the adjacent track in the station as much as she would the mountain scenery. (Hey, I know I would).

Maybe he was thinking of Pacific Western Rail Systems. Perhaps it was not a VIA promotional video, instead requested by someone at the Vancouver Sun?

Either way, it's great to see some progress on this long-awaited extreme makeover VIA edition.

Well actually one of the really cool features of the car is a floor to ceiling mural just along the hallway as you come up the stairs into the bullet lounge. It's a nice black and white picture of an old lounge attendant serving drinks/cigars in the lounge (probably from the 50's) and features a quote about the romance of rail travel. I felt it did a good job bringing back some character to an otherwise completely modern car.

Sent from my iPhone
Well they seem to have destroyed the character of it. Will have to ensure one of those is NOT on the train next time I book a berth - of course being in a lowly "upper berth" I probably would be banned from going back there anyway!

Didn't notice the "Denonville". Will look for that.

But the "88206 Via" on the side is kinda blah. All that time to refurbish the cars and they add that ugly stripe. I heard a reason for colour change, but forget.

Assume that Via logo will be on side eventually.

One would think a senior VIA official should know the correct name of his
company's station is Pacific Central.

That is not necessarily the case. You have to remember that a lot of
railroad operations have a lot of people who are brought in from the
private sector without any real knowledge about railroads. While they know
how to excel at business, which is why they were selected, the are, most of
the time, dumber than Joe Dirt when it comes to the particulars of the
railroad itself. And I suspect that the trend will continue with fewer and
fewer railroad executives being hired from the railroad side of business in
part because the few that are wanting too move up the ladder are often
scarfed up as quick as they are made available by the few operations that
still believe that knowledge and experience with railroads is an important
part of what they desire.

The years of the W. Graham Claytor Jr.'s, Robert Claytor's, Mike Haverty's
as the like are gone. Its a painful reality but that is how things are now
a days.

Nothing for my generation. Beside the lack of substance in my pocket book, it seems that I can't share the bed with my girl. Of my height I would be forced to use the sleeping spot diagonaly. I only know the Manor single bedrooms until now. That's what I would call a wonder of space utilization.

VIA # 2 passed Bala MP 11.1 today (Tuesday July 8)with 22 cars
at 6:10 PM, about 9 hrs late. Should arrive at Union about
6:35 pm or so.
The "or so" in the arrival time would be important if you were
trying to make a connection. 18:35 is the departure time for
#48, the last train of the day to Ottawa and intermediate points.
According to the VIA web site, it left right on time yesterday.
Unloading the passengers from #2 takes some time, so unless it
made up a few minutes after Tim's report, passengers probably
missed their connection.

Thanks Tim for posting the consist for this train. Does anyone know the details about following #1? Did it use the same power?

VIA # 2 came slowly off the siding at Oriole after a southbound GO train
(also on siding) after the passage of GO # 835 NB.

GO # 835 in fact had to wait for # 2 to enter the north end of the siding at
Oriole before proceeding to its stop at Oriole GO station.

SB GO trains take 27 mins from Oriole to Union station (no stops) so it
would have been very difficult to make up much if any time.
