The Expo Limited's schedule could be maintained with eight consists. It was
often late arriving in Montreal which must have made it difficult to get a
late arriving consist ready for that evening's departure.
The time required to ice cars was built into the Expo Limited's schedule but
wasn't the primary reason for it being slower than The Canadian. The Expo
continued the Dominion's basic schedule which had essentially established in
the 1930s. It maximized daylight running through the Rocky and Selkirk
mountains. This called for four nights out, with daytime turnaround at each
end. When The Canadian was inaugurated, it avoided many stops which the
Dominion continued to serve, so it wouldn't have been possible to speed up
the Dominion without changing the nature of the traffic it carried.
At the west end the Dominion's (and Expo's) schedule was close to the times
of The Canadian, and farthest from them at the east end. Accelerating this
schedule to be closer to that of The Canadian but at different times of day
would have put the train into some important points (as well as the Rockies)
in the middle of the night, no matter how you arrange it.

Subject: [CanPassRail] Re: Expo Limited
I want to thank everyone again for providing me with information on the Expo
Limited. I had intended to write an article on the train for the Toronto
Railway Historical Association website but I'm now thinking of doing a
spin-off article for Branchline. A review of past threads on this list about
the train provided much useful additional information.
I'm wondering at this point how many train sets had to be maintained by CP
to keep this operation going during the summer of 1967. Transit times for
the Montreal and Toronto sections varied from about 79 to 84 hours, much
longer than The Canadian, which at that point was in the 67 to 71 hour
range, due to the need to constantly replenish the ice-activated air
conditioning used on the older cars, a time-consuming and labour-intensive
process.
