Toronto - Windsor VIA #73 collided with a car at a level crossing
between London and Glencoe. Car driver killed, no one on the train
injured.

#73 was delayed about three hours, but is now moving again, and is
expected into Windsor at 19:18.

#73 turns in Windsor to become #78. Departure of that train is now
estimated for 19:45, two hours late.

Windsor - Toronto #76 was held up as the single-track line was blocked
by #73. It is currently running about three hours late. Arrival in
Toronto is estimated for 20:57.

#76 normally runs through Toronto, becoming Toronto - Ottawa #48,
which departs at 18:35. Because #76 is so late, #48 is being
bustituted today.

I'm a little surprised that there is no equipment available in
Toronto to make up a substitute #48. Is that routine -- no spare
equipment in Toronto at all, just the bare minimum needed to cover
the schedule when no problems crop up?

Thanks, waited for 76 but it never showed, now I know why.

Glad to hear the crew is safe, too bad about the driver.

Where, if anywhere, could 76 have passed 73?

Fridays are tight for equipment in Toronto. It does not surprise me.

I'm not sure I understand the question. #73 and 76 normally do
pass each other. I believe that is scheduled to happen a little
west of Glencoe. There's only one track at Glencoe:
<http://goo.gl/maps/kTAfu>, but two a little to the west:
<http://goo.gl/maps/znJN6>. I don't know if those are considered
to be two main tracks, or one main track and a siding. I suppose
there at least a few other places on the Chatham Sub where trains
can meet, if one train or the other is running late.

Today, #73 was immobilized at the accident site:
<http://goo.gl/maps/Npr1d>. There's only one track there, and
#73 was sitting on it, so #76 couldn't pass.

I have the feeling I've missed the point of your question.
Sorry about that.

#88 departed London on time (1951) with Toronto-bound passengers that were booked on #78 (scheduled for 1940). As of 2005EDT, #78 still has not left Windsor.

In theory, the equipment used on #88 could have been used earlier to make up a train to run on #76's time out of London. Instead, #83 and #88 were put together as they are usually on a Friday. Approx 125 passengers tonight out of London.

Again today, a late #76 affected #48, but it seems the situation is
being handled differently.

According to the VIA web site, #76 left Windsor 1 min late, and was
9 min late leaving Aldershot. But something bad happened between
Aldershot and Oakville (anybody have details?), and the train left
Oakville 3 h 29 min late. Arrival in Toronto is now forecast for
21:21, instead of the scheduled 17:52.

As mentioned above, #76 becomes #48 in Toronto, but unlike two
weeks ago, it seems #48 is not being bustituted today. According
to the VIA web site, it's just being delayed. Departure from Toronto
is now planned for 21:55 instead of the scheduled 18:35, and arrival
in Ottawa is predicted for 02:33.

Last night the 76-48 connection was an issue, predicted 20 minutes late. Announcement on board 48 mentioned a 'quick turnaround' at Union account late arrival of run-through consist. Boarding time was just a few minutes before departure, instead of the normal 30 mins, so departure was very nearly on time.
