My pleasure, Derek. I was in Amherst View, just west of Kingston, where this two of the photos in My Railfan Five Challenge were taken: http://tracksidetreasure.blogspot.ca/2014/10/my-railfan-five-challenge.html http://tracksidetreasure.blogspot.ca/2014/10/my-railfan-five-challenge.html

I headed up to the tracks and I thought of many hours spent there in my younger years. I even remembered hearing and seeing CNR 6060 passing by completely unexpected, deadheading on its way to a fantrip. Of course things have changed - sight lines have changed due to grapevines, weeds and trees, now allowed to grow by CN. The area is one of three on the Kingston Sub renowned for their seesaw profile - Drawbar Alley.

Treated to two CN westbounds, one DPU-equipped, on the north track in the hour before the Fan Train arrived, the thought crossed my mind that this might become one of those Not-So-Great Moments in Railfanning - when a passing train obliterates your view of the train you came to see. (These will be the focus of an upcoming Trackside Treasure post, along with another entitled Great Moments in Railfanning.)

The VIA engineer gave a friendly toot on the whistle. Last night I saw a story on our local news that CN Police were posting 22 signs in the Kingston area along the right-of-way, giving the number of a Crisis Line - an attempt to cut down on possible suicides by train. I tried to give a friendly wave while recording the train's passage to assure the crew that that was not my intention. (Though my wife would suggest i should contact a Railfan Crisis Line to cure me of my habits!)

I was toying with the idea of using the video feature of my camera, but decided to stay with stills. Imagine if it was Pavilion on the tail end...

It promises to be a happy ride home for the team and fans, Eric, what with the Montreal win (20-12). The last 34 seconds were a bit of a nail-biter but the Als pulled off another one. We should be seeing more VIA CFL football specials during the impending playoffs.

Having been out of town all day we are all so fortunate to see your excellent captions Eric. You certainly chose the right s-curve ! Pavilion would have made the perfect compliment alright.

Looking at everything that's been posted so far I'm surprised no one's taken note of the consist.

I'll see what I can do after the midnight hour. Stay tuned........

Thanks, Ken and Derek. I was unable to record every LRC car due to being at the right-of-way fence and the train was going like stink. However, at least we know there was nothing lurking in the consist other than LRC cars i.e. no domes, HEP2, or anything else unusual.

I did manage to catch and shoot the train in Cardinal (by the CASCO interchange). I'll post photos once I'm back home on Tuesday.

My chance was almost ruined by an eastbound freight, which came through on the near track less than 2 min later! I could hear it coming as the VIA special came into view, and just kept thinking "please, please don't block this one!"

Alright, here are the photos as promised.

As I mentioned, I decided to head out to Cardinal and catch the train by the Ingredion (former CASCO) interchange. As Ken said, it is a very nice un-obscured curve and a nice spot to view from the south side of the tracks (ideal for the morning light). My brother and I headed down there just before 9:30am, as I had figured the train should arrive around 9:45-ish.

While waiting, this westbound CN intemodal train arrived: Loading Image... https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5607/14975327323_89a7653d4e_b.jpg

At about 9:50, I could hear a train approaching from the west that sounded like a freight. With that sound still audible and getting louder in the background, VIA 665 appeared around the curve at 9:54am. As they were on the north track and the freight was approaching on the south, the timing was almost disastrous!

So here's 665:

Less than 2 minutes later that CN eastbound arrived, with a very new ES44AC on the head end. This was the first of CN's new AC units that I had seen in person and/or photographed, so that was neat.

Thanks once again to Ken for the heads-up. Still a shame that Pavillion wasn't actually up and going, but great to catch an extra anytime, and to have a chance to catch Glenfraser as well!

Oops, I know the focus here is on the passenger train, but still need to correct my mistake: CN 2340 (on the eastbound freight) is a late-order ES44DC, not an AC unit. Confusing them with the 2800s...

Great lookin' photos Tim. Along with your albums of everything else at your Flickr account. Besides that you do or have some models ? Including those unique chop nose borrowed 4100's from NJ Transit ? Wow.

Your shot was not very far from the original CN Cardinal station. That x-CN 1900 series SW 1200 at Canada Starch were the type used for a couple of years on CN's St.Hilaire commuter service in the early 60's. Besides everywhere out west.

I think it was 149 following that Via extra on the north track.

Thanks Ken!

It seems that it was indeed CN 149, as that's what I was informed by someone who photographed both trains about 30 miles farther down the line. That freight came through before VIA where I was, but seems the special passed it not too long after, as the other photos I was forwarded showed it coming through afterwards.

Where I shot from is actually right at the original Cardinal station. There is in fact a sign just a few feet away from where I was standing, which reads: "In memory of these dedicated and professional railroaders who worked at the Cardinal CNR station which once stood on this site: A.G. Bowden, Agent R.A. Hall, Agent H.F. Barlow, Operator L. Martell, Clerk A.K. Roy, Operator"

And yes, the models are mine and most are ones I've either modified or built/painted in some way. The model of 4140 I built from an IHP resin shell, with other details and then painted up. I've always loved the look of those units, they're sort of the inverse version of the hood unit with safety cab. Still need to get a chassis sorted for that one, but it has turned out well so far. I also have a few other AMT projects in the works right now, including one of the leased ex-Amtrak F40s that they repainted in the blue/white/blue stripes. Should have that one done pretty soon!

No it wasn't Mark. Looking behind the locomotives in Tim' s shot of 149. Before the curve in the rear is where the original line went. In a straight line more or less to Morrisburg.

The point beyond the south siding post for Canada Starch looking east ( or south ) is where the seaway diversion begins. To your left.

Forgot to say this beforehand Tim. I really don't deserve any credit for it. Someone gave me the consist requesting anonymity. Really.

I unintentionally created a falsehood when I repeated the lounge car number he gave me. Which was the Pavilion. I should have asked how come. Although it may have created an interesting discussion thread.

This individual deserves the applause not me. In all likelihood he'll probably read this post ?

The VIA special passed the CN freight at Brockville Station shortly after ten. A nicely timed move with the freight slowing down and later picking up speed again.

It ruined my video of the special. I watched the roofs of the special over the freight wagons. There was nothing I could do.

I should have shot from the nearby overpass. That would have made for a beautiful and special shot. There was however rain in the forecast so I stayed near the new glass enclosed waiting area on the platform.

Well, that’s life.

Considering the football game ended at a few minutes after 7:00, and allowing time for the team to change and board, etc, the likelihood is that the train would not have left Union much before 8:00, I would think. They weren't wasting time if they cleared Brockville just after 10:00.
