Came across this bargain researching a dome car trip aboard Amtrak's Adirondack. Currently in effect to or from Ticonderoga NY until October 28 2014.

A one way trip for two from Montreal can be had for as little as $28.- ! ( requires 3 day advance purchase )

However..

This would mean spending a night in Ticonderoga should one wish to make a
round trip on the train.

I would prefer to go all the way to Albany to spend the night and come back
north the next day. Maximum OCEAN VIEW availability.

Will miss doing this trip this year. Business travel will get in the way.

Ok. But....had you thought of this ?

Purchase your ticket (s) into and out of Ticonderoga. In whatever direction you want to go.

I would assume that the savings to be had would still add up.

It's a "Buy One Get One Free Deal", so it's only helpful if
you're travelling with someone else. Details here:
<http://www.amtrak.com/take-a-trip-to-ticonderoga-ny-with-a-buy-one-get-one-free-deal>

If you're just buying a ticket for yourself, the price of $28 or $31
(depending on what day you travel) is the same as usual. You can get
a 15% discount by going to <http://www.iloveny.com/travel-tools/>
and clicking on the Amtrak ad there.

True. For a day trip from Montreal, you can only go as far as
Westport. You'd miss a lot of great scenery south of there.
A two-day trip is much better, if you can spare the time.

That'd be my preference, too. You might consider Schenectady
as an alternative to Albany, especially if you're pinching
pennies -- the premise behind this thread. There are some
decent budget hotels within walking distance of the Schenectady
station. Hotels are farther away from the Albany station --
I've hiked it, but most people would want a cab -- and are
generally more expensive.

You'd miss a few miles of trackage between Schenectady and
Albany, but on one trip I took, the crew kicked everyone out
of the dome when we arrived in Schenectady, so the portion to
Albany was in coach.

It is a very scenic trip, and the dome car makes a huge
difference, so I recommend it while the dome car is available.
The above "I love NY" page gives the days of operation of the
dome.

Not a bad idea: buy Montreal - Ticonderoga and Ticonderoga -
Albany (or Schenectady) tickets. But again, that only offers
a saving if there are two of you travelling together.

Thanks Mr. Box by further detailing the two things that make this worthwhile. Which I should have pointed out initially. Thereby avoiding any need for an overnight stay as well.

Also for your mention of that 15% discount as another option.
