Following on the heels of the highly-successful and Facebook-friendly ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, this is The Railfan Five Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to share your railfanning story in the form of five photos that you select. The five photos:
are photographs that you took, or that others took with you, or of you. depict trains, tracks, a model railway or trackside views. inspired your love of trains, or illustrate the impact trains have had on your life. do not have to be perfect! can include captions - what makes the photo meaningful to you?
How do you take up the challenge? Post your five photos - on your blog, Facebook or wherever you share photos online. After posting the photos, challenge two others to do the same, within the next five days. Nominees who choose not to take up the challenge are encouraged to make a donation to a railway preservation project of their choice - local, regional or national.

The photos can include prototype railfanning or model railroading, freight or passenger (my five photos will definitely include VIA Rail!)
Please spread the word - let's see how far this can spread. More information here:

Eric, do you have any conditions, such as – at a minimum - no pictures of unsafe or illegal acts?

In a word, no, Mark. If someone engages in unsafe or illegal acts trackside, their railfan story will be a short one!

All the conditions or at least suggestions (so far) are listed in the post on my blog. Rest assured, at least one VIA photo will be included in My Railfan Five!

Then you should explicitly state that.

To paraphrase McCoy on Star Trek 'Dammit Jim, I'm a railfan, not a lawyer!' Eric

What is this world coming to when we have to explicitly tell people to use “common sense” and do not commit illegal acts and act in an unsafe manner. Anyone who commits an illegal or unsafe act trackside to participate in this challenge is already playing in the shallow end of the gene pool and would not understand or even heed the warning, but thanks to Darwin theory of evolution, they will not participate in this challenge for very long, or perhaps EVER AGAIN!

From the very beginning I never got the idea that this challenge would generate anything unlawful.

It could be an interesting exercise. But produce 5 of them ? Some are slides or actual photos which I'd have to get scanned. Somehow......

Nevertheless I hope you get a lot of contestants Eric. Et Bonne Chance !

Merci bien, Ken! Five photos - just a suggestion. Five days to get it done - just a suggestion. Nobody knows about procrastination better than I do - but I meant to mention that a few days ago :)

The main idea is to get us thinking about why we spend the time trackside that we do - what takes us there and what keeps us coming back?

Thanks for your support,
Eric
