Last week, Paul Smith resigned as chairman of the board of directors of VIA Rail.

Today, he announced that he is seeking the Conservative nomination in the
federal riding of Northumberland-Peterborough South.

The biography on the above web site highlights his work as a staffer to
cabinet ministers in the Mulroney era, something I don't recall being mentioned
in his VIA bio.

Northumberland-Peterborough South is my riding. I don't think he's lived here
until now, but apparently his wife's family is from these parts, and they're
building a house in Cobourg.

This isn't a completely safe seat. It has been Conservative since 2006, but it
has swung back and forth between Grits and Tories many times before then.
